Yaron Shavit

Yaron Shavit is the Deputy Chairperson of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel, responsible for the Jewish Peoplehood arena within the Jewish Agency. Since being elected to the position in 2021, Yaron has been working diligently to create vibrant two-way bridges between Israeli and diaspora Jewish communities world-wide. In October 2020, he was elected by the members of the 38th Zionist Congress, to serve as President of the 38th Zionist Congress. Yaron holds a BA in Law from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and an LLM from Bar-Ilan University. He lives in Mevasseret Zion as a member and past chair of the Reform congregation, married to Michal, the father of three and a happy grandfather to four grandchildren (so far). Yaron had a distinguished career as a litigator and commercial lawyer for 35 years and combined professional career with military and civil service. Yaron is a colonel (Reserves) in the IDF.

Pirkei Avot: "If I am not for myself, who is for me?”
Yaron Shavit, Deputy Chair of the Executive, will give a short introduction to the Jewish Agency and introduce Ms Sara Ribner, JAFI representative for Australia & New Zealand. We will then look at Pirkei Avot A: "If I am not for myself who is for me?” We will discuss the 3 parts of this Mishna, go over a few interpretations that were given by some of our scholars over the years, and discuss the relevance of this Mishna for us today.
