Jean Burnton
NEW ZEALAND

Jean’s parents and grandparents left Germany at varying stages throughout the 1930s for South Africa, where Jean was born. When she was 5, the family moved back to Germany and nearly 4 years later, Jean’s father got a job transfer to Wellington, NZ. They returned to Germany in the mid-70s and Jean stayed to finish her degree at Victoria University. The rest is history - she married a New Zealander, and is fortunate to have a son and daughter with loving partners, and two adorable grandsons. Jean has been a practising psychotherapist for over 30 years, and you could say she acquired her skills as a child trying to gather fragments and make connections. Jean has an interest in our emotional legacies in particularly the Holocaust and intergenerational trauma. Her deep interest in genealogy finds a place here too.

SESSION INFO

SUNDAY 9-10am

Lessons from Yesteryear: Holocaust, Identity, and Intergenerational Trauma

I grew up knowing some things about my family, and yet not knowing anything. My presentation is a personal story, but has universal application. I share how my understanding of emotional inheritance and intergenerational trauma has given shape to my identity and sense of place. I have previously presented to other groups on this subject; each time it brings fresh thoughts and the chance to engage with others. I hope that on this occasion our reflections can be deepened also.
