Hart

A solicitor by training, Deborah Hart is the chair of the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand. She chairs Utilities Disputes Limited and chaired Aoteoroa New Zealand’s independent electoral review. She undertook the last two reviews of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme. Deborah is also a member of the Human Rights Review Tribunal which determines privacy, human rights and health and disability cases. Deborah is the former executive director of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand, regularly advises on complaints schemes and also advises clients on government relations. A regular on RNZ’s The Panel, in her spare time, Deborah hangs out with family and friends.

​Remembering the Holocaust: Responsibilities to the dead and the living

What does “Never Again” actually require of us? How do we ensure that Holocaust education strengthens responsibility toward living Jews? Drawing on the work of Dara Horn and Deborah Lipstadt, this presentation examines the nexus between Holocaust remembrance and contemporary responsibility in New Zealand, and the challenges of educating about history while confronting antisemitism, misinformation and indifference.
